Virus Protection
Why am I getting the "restart.exe" error on my laptop? Help!
- D., Florida
Hi Douglas,
Douglas has an HP Pavillion laptop computer with WindowsXP HomeOS.
This file restart.exe may be created by F-Secure antivirus. It is not a part of Windows. So, if that is indeed your anti-virus program you should reinstall F-Secure program (or try to update it).
Do this in "Safe Mode."
- Start with your computer off.
- Turn on computer and immediately press and hold the F8 key until you met with a black screen called the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
- With the arrow up key choose the first option: "Safe Mode." This is comletely safe and you can damage anything. Press the Return (Enter) key. YOu may have to press enter again if it asks.
- Once the computer has restarted and you select the proceed button, you can now update F-Secure.
- Once that is done turn off your computer and proceed to reboot. It should have overwritten the restart.exe program - you are good to go.
This error message has been a problem for a few years now. If the above does not work, my best advise is to uninstall F-Secure (use the add/remove programs to remove it) and install Symantec Anti-virus which is a more robust and stable program.
It is unlikely a virus itself. Although not totally impossible.
