GPS Technology

I've been thinking about getting a GPS, but, I don't have a lot of money. Any recommendations?

I love GPS. Choosing one can be confusing. Here are a few suggestions.

First, an overview of what a GPS can do for you. Obviously, such devices will help you navigate unfamiliar territory. Whether you are on the road looking for a Starbucks, or in a boat looking for a distant bay, or on a motorcycle looking for the nearest gas station, a GPS can be good addition to your tech toys.

Some GPS devices do a lot more than just navigation. My pick is Mio Technology. I use the Mio DigiWalker which has "extra" features such as an MP3 player, video player, MC SSD card slot, photo viewer and BlueTooth Phone ready! Totally awesome because when I am sitting in traffic, I can watch a movie or listen to an audio book. And when I am moving the GPS displays my speed, driving time and estimated time of arrival. Pretty cool.

There are devices that fit into your pocket, most are battery operated, most have voice capabilities, some are designed for all weather conditions and can be mounted on a motorcycle or bicycle handlebar. Some have built-in speakers and most have an audio jack (necessary if you are on a motorcycle), some are built into a car stereo system (for example the Pioneer Electronics AVIC line of in-car receivers).

Back to the question at hand. The cost of a GPS device is coming down every month. At the same time features are getting better and better. Prices, for those with a color screen and portability start at about $100. It should have turn-by-turn directions, a full database of POI's (points of interest) and the ability to update or include additional maps via either download or card slot.

In my opinion, what make one better than another is the software's accuracy (how recent is the map database?) and speed of turn notification (does it display or speak that a turn is coming up fast?). To check current reviews go to GPS Reviews.

If you are getting an outdoor unit be sure the screen is easily readable in direct sunlight. If you are a world traveler, check if the unit has downloadable maps specific to the area where you are going.
